Data sources & credits
Last updated August 25, 2026
Second Cast is built on open data and open services. This page names each one, links to its source, and states how it is licensed, so the attribution those licenses ask for lives in a single, permanent place.
Map spots from OpenStreetMap
The public boat ramps and fishing piers on our map come from OpenStreetMap, a map of the world built by a community of volunteers.
© OpenStreetMap contributors. This data is made available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. Any derived work we share carries the same license, and where we show an individual spot it stays linked to its original OpenStreetMap record.
Federal recreation areas from Recreation.gov
National-forest and other federal fishing spots on our map come from the Recreation Information Database (RIDB) behind Recreation.gov. This is public information published by the U.S. Government.
Species imagery
Species artwork is primarily public-domain fish illustrations by Duane Raver, produced for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Where those are unavailable we use openly-licensed photographs from iNaturalist and Wikimedia Commons (CC0 / CC BY). Each species page credits the specific source under its image.
The base map: MapTiler & OpenStreetMap
The map itself is rendered with tiles from MapTiler, whose data is also © OpenStreetMap contributors. Both are credited on the map itself as well.
Weather & conditions from Open-Meteo
The bite forecast’s weather, pressure, wind, and marine data come from Open-Meteo, offered free for non-commercial use under CC BY 4.0. Open-Meteo in turn draws on national weather services, including NOAA and the national meteorological agencies whose models it aggregates.
Species & game-fish data from state wildlife agencies
Our species guides are grounded in public information from state wildlife agencies, chiefly the NC Wildlife Resources Commission for freshwater fish and the NC Division of Marine Fisheries for coastal species. Seasons, ranges, and regulations are set by those agencies, not by us.
Licenses & regulations from official state portals
The license and rules information on our Licenses & Rulespage links straight to each state’s official wildlife agency and its authorized license portal. Those pages are the final word; we only point the way.
Solunar & astronomy
Sun and moon timing for the forecast is computed with SunCalc (MIT license), an open-source astronomy library.
A note on accuracy
Open data is a starting point, not the last word. Spot locations, seasons, and conditions can be out of date or wrong. Always confirm access, regulations, and safety against the official source before you fish.
Corrections
Spotted a wrong pin or a missing credit? For map data, the best fix is to edit it at the source on OpenStreetMap so everyone benefits. For anything else, email support@secondcast.io.
