Privacy Policy

This policy explains what Second Cast collects, why, and who we share it with. Second Cast operates Second Cast and is responsible for the data described here. We keep the collection small on purpose: most of the site works without an account, and we do not sell your data.

What we collect

When you just read the site

You can browse the species guides, lessons, gear, and spot map without an account. When you do, our hosting provider records standard server logs, including your IP address, browser type, and the pages you request. While the site is in private beta, we also set one cookie to remember that you entered the beta password.

Your location

The “near me” feature asks your browser for your location so it can show what is catchable in your area. Your device resolves those coordinates to a US state in your browser, and only the state is used. We do not store your coordinates and we do not send them to our servers. You can decline the browser prompt and pick a state by hand instead.

If you join the waitlist

The waitlist form collects your email address, your name if you choose to give it, and which feature you are most interested in. We use this to tell you when your access is ready and to decide what to build first.

If you sign in

An account is only needed to publish content, so most readers never make one. If you do sign in, we store your email address, your name, and, when you sign in with Google, the profile image and account identifier Google returns. Each active session also records the IP address and browser it was created from, so you can tell your own sessions apart and we can spot abuse.

Cookies

We use a small number of first-party cookies: a sign-in session cookie when you are logged in, and a beta-access cookie during the private beta. We do not set our own advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. Third parties named below may set their own cookies when their code runs.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information. We rely on a small set of service providers to run Second Cast, and data reaches them only as needed to do their job:

• Hosting and database. Our hosting provider (Vercel) and database provider (Neon) process requests and store the data above on our behalf.
• Analytics. We use Vercel Web Analytics to count page views and see which pages are used. It does not use cookies and does not build a profile of you or track you across other sites.
• Sign-in email. When you request a sign-in link, your email address is sent to our email provider (Resend) to deliver that message.
• Google sign-in. If you choose to sign in with Google, Google shares a basic profile with us and handles that sign-in under its own privacy policy.
• Maps. The spot map loads map tiles from MapTiler. Loading those tiles reveals your IP address to MapTiler, as any map request would.
• Error monitoring. We use Sentry to catch crashes and bugs. When an error happens, diagnostic details such as your IP address, browser, and what the app was doing may be sent to Sentry so we can fix it.
• Affiliate links.We use Impact.com to measure page views and to turn some outbound gear links into tracked affiliate links. See “Affiliate links” below.

Affiliate links

Some links to fishing gear are affiliate links. If you follow one and buy something, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. To make that work, our affiliate partner (Impact.com) records that a click came from Second Cast and may set its own cookie. This never changes what we recommend: the gear is chosen on merit, not on commission.

How long we keep it

We keep account and waitlist information for as long as your account or signup exists, and remove it within a reasonable time after you ask us to delete it. Server logs and error diagnostics are kept only as long as our providers retain them for security and debugging. Sign-in sessions expire on their own.

Your choices

• Decline the location prompt and choose your state by hand.
• Ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, by writing to the address below.
• Ask us to remove you from the waitlist at any time, and we will.

Children

Second Cast is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has given us data, contact us and we will remove it.

Security

We take reasonable steps to protect your data, but no method of storage or transmission over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Second Castgrows. When we do, we will change the “last updated” date above, and significant changes will be made clear on the site.
